PE and Sport
PE Kit
For PE lessons, children will need:
- White round-neck T-shirt (not polo shirts)
- Black Shorts
- In Autumn/Winter, children may prefer to wear plain black, grey or burgundy tracksuit bottoms or plain black leggings instead of shorts
- Black daps or plain black or white trainers (please note these must be Velcro, if they can’t tie their laces and no ‘high top’ trainers allowed)
- A separate plain black, grey or burgundy round-neck jumper (no zips or hoods)
During PE lessons, children are not allowed to wear jewellery of any kind, including earrings so please ensure these can be removed or are taped over. Long hair must be tied up.
All clothing items should be clearly named to avoid loss or confusion with other children.
Sporting Events
House Sport
We use house sport competitions to engage all of our pupils in physical activity. We run cross country regularly across the school year and find it is a great way to engage the whole school in physical activity.
Sports Captains
Our Sports Captains have been selected to complete a number of tasks throughout the school year to support and promote physical activity in school. They will:
- Help run our house events
- Promote physical activity for all pupils
- Write reports for fixtures and events
- Analyse data from a pupil questionnaire about PE and sport in our school
Clubs & Fixtures
We have an extensive range of extra-curricular clubs at Puriton, which are delivered by teaching staff, teaching assistants and Inspired Schools such as football, dance, yoga, netball and multi-skills.
Inter-school Sport
We provide a number of opportunities for children to represent the school, particularly in years 4-6, where there are numerous competitions and festivals available.
Sport Outside of School
We are developing links with the community and are providing pathways for children to further develop their growing sporting talents, during out of school hours.
Christmas Active Challenges
As you get into the festive spirit ready for 1st December, why not try one of these active Christmas challenges? I particularly like the 31 days one and I'd love to see you all having a go! Even if as adults you may not be so keen - trust me - the children will love it!
Yoga is a fantastic way to improve focus, memory, self-esteem, academic performance, behaviour and can even reduce anxiety and stress - for both children and adults!
This is for those of you who relish a challenge and enjoy keeping fit and healthy on a regular basis!
Workshops
We provide a range of workshops for children of all ages across the school and across the school year.
In the past we have provided children with various opportunities such as:
- Skipping
- Mini Warriors
- Circuits
- ScootFit
- Bikeability
Swimming
We currently take our Year 3 children swimming for 10 lessons of 45 minutes with the aim to help as many children achieve their 25m as possible. We also use the Sports Premium Spend to take Year 4 and Year 5 for additional swimming lessons as well when possible.
There is a requirement for schools to publish key information about the swimming ability of Year 6 pupils. The table below shows this for the school year 2023-2024:
Year 6 pupils that can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25m. | 87% |
Year 6 pupils that can use a range of strokes effectively. | 87% |
Year 6 pupils that can perform a self-rescue in different water-based situations. | 94% |
Active Travel
Active Travel is a fantastic way to increase the amount of physical activity pupils complete in a day. Active travel could include walking, cycling or scooting.
Active travel can increase the concentration of children and there is a positive relationship between physical activity and academic performance. Physical activity encourages healthy development and will help to maintain a healthy weight, improving muscular strength, endurance and flexibility.
Actively traveling builds exercise into the daily routine. 15 minutes of exercise can significantly improve a child’s mood and exercise can help to reduce anxiety and stress.
As a school, we want the children to be as active as possible and we are trying to promote active travel to school. If you choose to cycle or scoot, please wear a helmet and ride sensibly at all times. Sports Captains will be monitoring the numbers of pupils travelling to school in an active way and we are looking forward to trying to get more people moving more.
CPD for Staff
Teaching staff have been able to enhance their confidence and ability in teaching PE through our CPD programme Inspired Schools. Each class teacher works closely with high-quality coaches across the school year. During these blocks, teachers are able to observe high-quality teaching of PE, before planning effective sessions themselves, which are then taught alongside the coach. After teaching alongside the coach, the class teacher will lead the sessions independently.
